Tile types we carry

Every type has its tradeoffs. We’ll walk you through them in the showroom and help you find the right one for your room.

  • A cart of large-format Elysium tile panels in onyx, grey, copper, black marble and green stone looks, in front of a lit wall of marble-look tile.Large-format tile

    Porcelain

Porcelain is dense and soaks up very little water. That’s why it’s the usual pick for busy floors, showers and anything outdoors, where it holds up through freezing weather. It takes more labor to cut and set than ceramic, so budget a little more for the install.

  • Two racks of stacked stone panels in our showroom, one of them an MSI Rockmount stacked stone display, beside the staircase.Stacked stone

    Natural stone

Marble, travertine, slate and other quarried stone have natural veining and color that manufactured tile can’t quite copy. See the samples in person before you choose, because every piece is a little different. Most stone also needs sealing now and then to resist stains.

  • A hanging rack of Elysium mosaic sample cards: stacked sticks, diamonds, lantern shapes and onyx pickets.Mosaic tile

    Mosaic

Mosaics are small pieces of glass, porcelain or stone set on mesh sheets, so they follow curves where a single large tile won’t bend. They work well on shower floors, borders and accent walls. There’s more grout to clean, but a mosaic is an easy way to add a focal point without retiling the whole room.

Ceramic

Ceramic is fired clay. It’s softer and easier to cut than porcelain, and it usually comes in lower on your quote. It does well on walls and backsplashes, and on floors that don’t get much traffic. For showers, patios and busy rooms, we’d steer you to porcelain.

Where tile goes

What works on a backsplash won’t always hold up on a shower floor or a patio.

Floors
Porcelain and natural stone are the go-to for kitchen, entry and bathroom floors that get walked on every day.
Showers and tubs
For wet walls and shower floors, we reach for porcelain and mosaic, because they take constant water without soaking it in.
Backsplashes
Ceramic and mosaic are popular here. Ceramic is easy to keep clean, and either one is simple to swap out later if your taste changes.Pair it with a new countertop
Fireplaces
Natural stone and matte porcelain both handle the heat and make the fireplace stand out, with texture a painted wall can’t give you.
Patios and outdoors
Frost-resistant porcelain handles Oregon rain and winter cold without cracking.

Tile questions

Do I need porcelain or ceramic?

It depends on where the tile is going. Porcelain is denser and holds up better on busy floors, in showers and outside, while ceramic often costs less and suits walls, backsplashes and lower-traffic floors. Tell a designer how you use the room, and we’ll help you narrow it down.

Can you install the tile you sell?

Yes. Our own crew does the install, so the shop that helps you pick your tile is the one that puts it in. We have 20+ years of installation experience.

Do you help with design?

Yes, and it’s free. A designer walks the showroom with you and helps you compare samples side by side, using your room dimensions or photos as a guide. We can also put together a mood board or a 3D layout for your room.

Can I take samples home?

Ask a designer about samples for your project when you visit the showroom.

Do I need to know exactly what I want before I visit?

No. Come in with a finished plan or just a few photos of your room. Most people make up their minds once they’re walking the showroom with a designer and holding samples side by side.
